Calvary Graz: Sacred silence over the city

The origins of Calvary date back to 1606. At that time, the Jesuit Brotherhood of the Purification of Mary had the first three crosses erected on the so-called Austein – a striking slate rock said to resemble the biblical Golgotha. In the following decades, an impressive Baroque Way of the Cross complex was created with 14 stations, several grottoes, wayside shrines, and chapels.

A special highlight is the Calvary Church with its "Holy Staircase" and the Ecce Homo stage. The entire complex was extensively renovated in 2002. Today, it invites you to pause, marvel, and stroll – completely free of charge, in the heart of nature.

Calvary isn't a typical tourist destination—and that's precisely why it's so special. The Baroque chapels, with their intricate sculptures and ceiling paintings, tell biblical stories with a depth that's touching even without a religious background.

The location on the Austein also offers impressive panoramic views of the city and the surrounding hills. Here you'll find sacred art, nature, panoramic views—and an atmosphere unlike any other place in Graz.

Calvary is most beautiful in the early morning or just before sunset. Then, golden light falls on the Baroque figures, and you're usually almost alone. If you enjoy photography or simply quiet observation, take your time—even small details like inscriptions, reliefs, or the painted wooden ceilings are worth seeing.

Journey:
The best way to get there is to take bus lines 40, 52, or 67 to the "Kalvarienbergstraße" stop. From there, you can reach the entrance to the Stations of the Cross on foot in about 10 minutes. If you're coming by bike, you can reach it via the Mur River or along Kalvarienbergstraße. Parking is very limited.
