Morning sun over the Mur, birdsong in the floodplain forest, narrow paths along quiet waterways – pure nature in the heart of Graz.
Are you longing for a quiet place that lets you breathe deeply – without having to travel far? The Murauen between Shopping North and the Murheurigen in Graz-Andritz and Gösting are just such a retreat. Here, the Mur River reveals its most pristine side: with oxbows, wild riverbank vegetation, and a natural soundscape of rustling leaves, birdsong, and the occasional croak of a frog.
Whether you simply want to escape the hustle and bustle, cycle along the water or stroll mindfully through the landscape: in this section of Graz's Murauen you will find nature right at your fingertips - and yet you are only minutes away from the city.
The floodplain landscape along the Mur River near Andritz is part of the European Natura 2000 protected area "Graz Murauen" – and a prime example of a near-natural river landscape in the heart of the city. The construction of the Mur power plants in recent decades has significantly altered this area – making the preserved and renaturalized areas all the more important, as they now provide valuable habitats for waterfowl, amphibians, and rare plants.
The atmosphere is especially magical in the early morning and late evening hours: mist hangs over the water, herons fly over the reeds, and the light plays in the treetops. Even on hot summer days, the shady floodplain forests remain pleasantly cool.
The combination of proximity to the city and real wilderness makes the Murauen between Murheurigem and Shopping Nord Unique: You are in nature in just a few minutes from the bus stop – without noise, without asphalt.
Narrow paths lead along the old Mur river arms, offering cozy benches, shady spots to linger, and ever-surprising views of the water. Those who keep their eyes open might spot kingfishers, beaver tracks, or even deer.
And the detour is also worthwhile for those who are active in sports: The Mur Cycle Path runs right past, as do popular running and walking routes.
It is particularly quiet early in the morning or when it is raining lightly – then the meadows seem almost mystical.
Those who enjoy photography or observation should take some time to explore the Mur River tributary near the Murheurigen wine tavern. Here, trees are reflected in the water, dragonflies dance in the air, and with a little patience, you might spot rare bird species.
Please note: Some of the paths are natural – good footwear and consideration for animals and plants are mandatory.
