St. Gotthard Castle is ideal if you want to explore Graz beyond the traditional sights: for a leisurely stroll, a quiet photo opportunity, or simply a brief moment of time travel. And the best part? You're just a few minutes from the city center—yet surrounded by greenery.
The roots of St. Gotthard Castle reach back to 12th century At that time it was a farm called “Weinzierl”. In the 14th century, the St. Lambrecht Abbey the property, which was finally built between 1654 and 1659 according to plans by the Italian architect Domenico Sciassia was converted into a castle with a chapel.
Particularly steeped in history: 1673 even equipped Emperor Leopold I paid a visit to the property. This was not only an honor, but also cemented the castle's importance as a retreat for the abbots of the Benedictine monastery.
Despite numerous renovations – including the demolition of the castle church in the 19th century – the historic character has been preserved to this day. Particularly charming: the Archways on the upper floor and a Building inscription from 1660, which is still visible on the ground floor today.
The atmosphere around the castle is tranquil and almost meditative. The grounds are not open to the public, but can be easily viewed from the hiking trail on the Admonter Kogel—a worthwhile stop on a short tour of discovery through the north of Graz.
St. Gotthard Castle is not a museum with a souvenir shop – it is a place that impresses in a quiet way. baroque architecture, lush nature and cultural history makes it a real insider tip for anyone who wants to discover Graz in more depth.
