The climb to the ruins isn't just a short hike through shady mixed forest, but a short journey back to the Middle Ages. Once at the top, you'll be rewarded with one of the most beautiful views of Graz—and with the quiet, powerful atmosphere of a place that has experienced much.
Although the ruins themselves are currently off-limits for safety reasons, the surrounding area and the neighboring Jungfernsprung are freely accessible – and the walk there is an experience in itself. Ideal for anyone looking to combine a short hike with views, history, and a natural experience.
The castle was built in the 11th century by the Counts of Formbach-Pitten and served for many centuries as an important ruling and defensive seat in the north of Graz. In 1723, it was largely destroyed by a lightning strike and the subsequent fire. Since then, it has remained a picturesque ruin with imposing remnants of its former walls, towers, and gates.
On your way up, you'll be accompanied by birdsong, the rustling of trees, and—depending on the season—the scent of damp moss or dry earth. Once at the top, the Graz Basin lies at your feet. To the west, you can see as far as the Schöckl mountain, and to the south, the city's rooftops glow. The atmosphere is tranquil, archaic, a little enchanted—perfect for taking a deep breath and unwinding.
The castle ruins Gösting are a quiet star among Graz's day-trip destinations. Located just minutes from urban life, it feels like a secluded place from another time.

Near the ruins lies the legendary Maiden jump – a dolomite rock that rises like a pulpit above the valley. From there, you have an even more dramatic view of the Mur Valley.
The climb is especially beautiful in autumn, when the forest transforms into a sea of color. And if you get there early enough, you can see the morning mists rising over the city—a magical moment!

Journey:
Take bus line 40 to the final stop, "Gösting." From there, follow the signs for "Burgruine Gösting" (castle ruins), which is about a 30-45-minute uphill walk. Sturdy footwear is recommended!
