High above western Graz, this vantage point sits like a silent sentinel over the city. The climb through the forests of Gösting is not only a sporting challenge, but also a true nature experience: birds chirp, leaves crunch beneath your feet, and with every step, the hustle and bustle of the city fades a little. And then you're at the top—at the highest point of the Plabutsch, 754 meters above sea level—and a view opens up before you that takes your breath away.
Whether alone with the camera, with hiking friends or on a romantic stroll: the Fürstenstand is a real highlight for all those interested in more than just the old town and the Schlossberg – and for all those who like to go on a journey of discovery, even a little off the beaten track.
The Fürstenstand is not only a popular vantage point, but also a place steeped in history. As early as 1830, Emperor Franz I is said to have stood here and enjoyed the view over the countryside – an event to which the square also owes its name. The first wooden lookout post was built shortly thereafter, renovated several times, and finally replaced in 2024 by a modern observation platform made of steel and wood.
Today, a memorial stone commemorates the imperial visit. The atmosphere up there is serene, almost majestic. The view sweeps over the Graz Basin, the Mur River, the Schöckl Mountains to the east, and far into the hilly landscape of western Styria. On clear days, the view extends as far as the Koralpe.
The Fürstenstand is far more than just a viewpoint—it's a place where the city meets nature. You can hike, bike, or simply drive up there—and you'll be rewarded with a view that never fails to delight even the most seasoned Graz residents.

Attention early risers: The sunrise at Fürstenstand is magical! When the first rays of light sweep over the hills and Graz awakens in a golden haze, everything seems enchanted.

Journey:
Take bus line 40 to the final stop, "Gösting." From there, follow hiking trails 2 or 2a – about a 1.5-hour walk through the forest. Alternatively, you can drive over the Gaisbergsattel (access via Wetzelsdorf) to the mountain road. The Fürstenstand is also easily accessible by mountain bike.
