St. Leonhard Church was first mentioned in the 14th century. Like many churches, it has been rebuilt, expanded, and altered several times – yet its character has remained unchanged. After a renovation in 1433 and its consecration in 1535, the church remained a reliable landmark in the district for centuries. Particularly striking is the Baroque onion dome, built in 1747 and still a defining feature today. Inside, you'll find a neo-Gothic space, complemented by modern elements from the 1960s – an exciting juxtaposition of history and the present.
The adjacent cemetery, officially in its current location since 1817, is considerably older: the first records date back to 1468. Over time, the cemetery developed into one of the city's most important burial sites. Not only because many important figures found their final resting place here, but also because the complex itself was artistically designed. Sculptures, inscriptions, mausoleums—here, you'll find history at every turn.
St. Leonhard Church isn't an architectural masterpiece—rather, it's a place of quiet power. Its combination of Gothic, Baroque, and modern styles creates a harmonious and warm, almost familiar atmosphere. You enter and immediately feel welcome—whether you're a religious person or simply want to enjoy its atmosphere.
And then there's the cemetery: a place of peace, yes – but also a place of stories. You'll discover names like Wilhelm von Tegetthoff and Richard von Krafft-Ebing, walk past artfully carved stones, and find surprisingly modern inscriptions among moss-covered graves. This cemetery is not a place of forgetting – it's a place of remembering.
If you're here in autumn, you should visit the cemetery early in the morning. The low sun bathes the leaves in a warm gold, and the shadows of the gravestones are sharply outlined on the ground—an atmosphere you won't soon forget. Particularly beautiful are the small paths along the edges, away from the main routes. And be sure to take a moment to pause at the Tegetthoff Mausoleum—one of the most impressive tombstones in all of Graz.
You can find the Leonhardkirche in the Leonhardstraße 14, 8010 Graz, directly opposite the LKH University Hospital Graz. The Tram lines 1 and 7 take you to the stop St. Leonhard/LKHFrom there, it's just a two-minute walk. You can also easily reach the church by bike or on foot from the university district or the city park.
