The mirror-smooth pond is nestled between the Leech Forest and old villas, and the surrounding trees provide shade in the summer and bathe everything in warm colors in the autumn. Whether you want to start the day with exercise, read a book, or simply gaze at the sky on the water's surface – the Hilmteich offers you exactly what you need.
The Hilmteich was originally used as a clay pit for brick production in the 16th century. Over time, the area developed into a popular recreational area—especially from the 19th century onward, when the Hilmteichschlössl palace was built and became a popular destination for Graz society.
Today, only a faint trace of the once-glamorous past remains – but it's precisely this contrast that makes the place so charming. The pond appears unruffled, tranquil, and timeless. The combination of nature, history, and the proximity to the Leechwald forest give it a special atmosphere that you can only find here in Graz.
Hilmteich isn't your typical urban pond—it's a true all-rounder: a natural idyll, a retreat, a playground, a sports area, and a meeting place all in one. Here, you'll find a rare blend of local recreation and activity. In summer, you can go pedal boating or explore the high ropes course in Leechwald. In winter, the pond sometimes freezes over—transforming into an atmospheric ice rink.
Add to that the proximity to the botanical garden, the university, and many hidden squares. This makes Hilmteich the ideal starting point for small urban explorations—or simply a place you'll want to stay.
Come during the golden hour—just before sunset—and sit on one of the benches along the far bank, where the forest begins. Here you'll not only have the best view of the water, but also the chance to experience the changing light, mood, and colors in all their beauty. It'll be even more enjoyable if you take a hot coffee with you or pick up a snack from the on-site kiosk.
Hilmteich is located in the district Geidorf, directly at the Leechwald. The best way to reach it is by Tram line 1 (Stop Hilmteich/Botanical Garden) or by bus lines 41 and 58. If you come by bike, the HR5 cycle path leads directly past the pond.
There are parking spaces on Hilmteichstraße – but be careful: on weekends and in good weather, they fill up quickly.
