St. Martin Castle was first documented in the first half of the 11th century, as the property of the Aribons. Since 1144, it has been documented as the provostship of Admont Abbey. In the mid-16th century, it was expanded into a Renaissance castle, and in 1638, master builder Peter Fasol gave the building its present appearance.
Right next to it is the Castle Church of St. Martin, which is considered the oldest documented church in Graz. The first sacred building may have existed as early as the 9th century. The present church dates from 1642 and houses a Baroque masterpiece: The high altar by Josef Stammel depicts three life-size horses – a unique feature of Baroque sacred art.
Since 1914, the castle has served as a community education center. Today, seminars, workshops, concerts, and cultural events take place here. The atmosphere is unique: a place where history remains tangible and education can take place amidst nature.
