Mühl-Schlössl: Hidden gem in Graz Lend

The Mühl-Schlössl was built around 1560 as a residence by the then Protestant regional physician Christoph von Gabelkhoven. It originally served as a residence, later as a rectory, and was remodeled several times over the centuries. Particularly striking is the characteristic chapel tower with its dome and lantern, which gives the building an almost fairytale-like silhouette.

After suffering severe damage from a bombing raid in 1945, the Mühl-Schlössl (little mill castle) was extensively restored in 1955. Today, it houses the rectory of the Protestant Church of the Holy Cross, located directly next door. A covered arcade connects the two buildings, lending the ensemble an almost monastic flair. Despite its turbulent history, the little castle has retained its dignity and tranquility—and this is precisely what you feel with every step across the cobblestones in front of the house.

Visit the Mühl-Schlössl in the late afternoon, when the sun is low and the light filters through the trees in the Volksgarten. The shadows cast on the baroque façade are particularly atmospheric then. Take a few minutes to take a look inside the adjacent Kreuzkirche (Church of the Holy Cross) – the bright, simple interior surprises with a modern glass wall and exceptional acoustics.
