The foundation stone of the present church was laid in 1714, after a 17th-century chapel had already stood on the same site. In 1999, Pope John Paul II elevated the church to a basilica—a title reserved only for particularly important churches.
The architecture is a prime example of Styrian late Baroque: white and gold, lavish stucco work, elaborate frescoes, and a central statue of the Virgin Mary, to which thousands make pilgrimages each year.
