The Rettenbach Gorge is the only gorge in the Graz metropolitan area and offers a surprising experience otherwise only found in the Alps: babbling waterfalls, steep rock faces, moss-covered walkways, and a cool, shady path along the Rettenbach stream.
From the very first step into the gorge, the atmosphere changes: the sounds of the city fade, and birdsong and rushing water take over. The path leads you over small wooden bridges, past mossy stones, and through a lush gorge forest that remains pleasantly cool on hot summer days. For locals, the gorge has long been an insider tip for unwinding and taking a breather – for tourists, it offers a surprising contrast to the urban side of Graz.
The Rettenbach Gorge is not only a scenic highlight, but also geologically fascinating. The rock exposed here – so-called diabase – is of volcanic origin and is found only in a few places in Graz. In the past, iron ore was even mined in the gorge. Today, the entire area is a nature reserve and is home to a variety of plant species, including rare ferns, mosses, and shade plants that find ideal conditions in the humid environment.

If you want to extend your walk through the gorge, the subsequent climb to the Stephanienwarte on the "Platte" is worthwhile. From there, you'll enjoy a magnificent panoramic view over Graz all the way to the Koralpe – especially beautiful at sunset. And don't worry: The climb is not only visually rewarding, but also a great workout in between.
