ORF Regional Studio Styria: The "Peichl-Torte" - architectural icon in the east of Graz

The ORF Styria regional studio was built between 1978 and 1981 according to the plans of Gustav Peichl – one of Austria's most renowned architects, who also became famous as a cartoonist under the name "Ironimus." Peichl designed a total of nine regional studios for the ORF, each with its own individual touch, but all following the same principle: circular, functional, modular – yet striking.

The Graz studio opened on September 12, 1981. The building's structure follows a clear concept: a central, circular main room is surrounded by individual segments housing the editorial department, studio, technical department, and administration. This division symbolizes openness and communication – values that also fit with public broadcasting.

The building still appears modern today: exposed concrete, clean lines, and the absence of classic facade elements make it a model of functionalist architecture. A closer look reveals many design details that lend the complex an almost playful touch—such as the rhythmic arrangement of the windows or the exciting courtyards.

The "Peichl-Torte" isn't a typical sightseeing destination—and that's precisely what makes it so fascinating. It represents an era of architectural awakening and is one of the most important buildings of Styrian post-war modernism. The studio tours are particularly exciting, allowing you to experience the television studio of "Steiermark heute," the radio technology of Radio Steiermark, and the broadcasting operations up close. The Broadcasting House Gallery, with changing exhibitions by regional artists, is also worth a visit. And as you walk around the building, pay attention to the play of light and shadow on the façade—especially in the early evening hours, the building appears almost sculptural.
