Castle Eggenberg in Graz-Eggenberg: splendour, park & planetary clock in baroque perfection

Lock Eggenberg was built starting in 1625 on the orders of Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg, one of the most influential men at the court of Emperor Ferdinand II. What makes it special is that the entire building follows a well-thought-out, symbolically charged plan. The castle's floor plan, the number of rooms, and even the windows allude to time, order, and the cosmos—a kind of baroque manifestation of world knowledge.

The 24 State rooms with original furniture, paintings and wall decorations will take you back to another time. Particularly impressive is the Planet Hall With its ceiling frescoes that artfully combine astrological and mythological elements, it's a true gem, accessible only as part of a guided tour—and definitely one of the highlights.

Also the Castle Park tells its own story: Once strictly geometric, then redesigned as an English landscape garden, it now invites you to stroll, marvel, and linger. With shady paths, ponds, sculptures, and a spacious meadow landscape, it feels like a green refuge in the heart of the city. And when a white peacock crosses your path, you know you're in a special place.

Castle Eggenberg is not just a place of the past – it is a vibrant center for art, culture, and nature. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "City of Graz – Historical Centre and Castle Eggenberg" is one of Austria's most important cultural treasures.

In addition to the state rooms, you will also find two museums of the Universalmuseum Joanneum on the site:

• the Archaeological Museum, with finds from prehistory to Roman times
• the Old Gallery, with masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the Baroque

And in summer, the park becomes a stage for concerts, festivals, and cultural events. Whether you simply want to stroll through the park or are passionate about art and history, you'll find both here in a unique combination.

Be sure to plan your castle visit in advance – especially the tour of the state rooms books up quickly. And if you want a leisurely stroll through the park, come in the late afternoon: That's when the golden light falls on the palace facade, the crowds dwindle, and the atmosphere is almost magical.

Extra tip for photographers and romantics: The castle park at sunset is a dream setting – whether with a camera or a picnic blanket.

By tram line 1 Get off at the "Schloss Eggenberg" stop. From there, it's just a few minutes' walk. It's also easily accessible by bike via Eggenberger Allee or on foot from the main train station (approx. 25 minutes).
