History & atmosphere of Hill of Crosses

The Calvary Eggenberg was founded in the 19th century as Private initiative originally as a simple Stations of the Cross with a small chapel at the highest point. Over the years, it developed into a place with its own unique dynamic: people began to own crosses, memories and signs – as a thank you, a request or a silent remembrance. This is how the nickname “Hill of Crosses” – based on the famous Lithuanian Hill of Crosses in Šiauliai.

Today, you'll find around 14 stations of a classic Way of the Cross, complemented by dozens of wooden crosses, metal crosses, cloths, photographs, and other silent messages. The climb is short but steep and leads through a small, overgrown forest with views of the rooftops of Eggenberg.

The atmosphere is unusually dense and peacefulNo street noise, just the rustling of leaves, birdsong, and your own breathing. It's one of those places where time seems to stand still for a moment.
