Jakominiplatz Graz: transport hub, city life and history all in one

The Jakominiplatz did not just appear at some point – its history dates back to the late 18th century. It was named after Kaspar Andreas Ritter von Jacomini, a Styrian entrepreneur who shaped the surrounding district. At that time, the square was still on the outskirts of the city and was primarily used for agriculture – until, over time, it became a lively hub.

The building is a historical eye-catcher Jakominiplace 16, known as the “Old Post OfficeIt was built in 1786, originally as a coaching inn for horse-drawn carriages. Today it houses shops and offices – but the neoclassical façade still speaks of earlier times.

At the same time, the square is a symbol of modern Graz: architecturally contradictory, full of movement, angular and honest. striking yellow light poles and the ring-shaped rondeau Contemporary accents are added in the center of the square. Nothing is polished here – and this is precisely what gives the place its very own atmosphere: a mix of urban bustle and established character.

It's a starting point for many things – you can reach the Old Town, the Opera, Herrengasse, or the Augarten in just a few minutes on foot. At the same time, it's one of the few places where the whole of Graz meets in a small space: students, commuters, tourists, artists, and market vendors. Come in the late morning, when the square is lively but not overcrowded.
