In the midst of the hustle and bustle of Jakominiplatz, where trams cross, people meet and Graz shows its most modern side, you will find a building that may seem inconspicuous at first glance – but upon closer inspection is a real architectural gem: the Old Post OfficeIts bright façade, perfectly proportioned window axes, and spacious courtyard tell of a time when mail was still transported by horse-drawn carriage – and when the Jakominiplatz itself was still a new district.

This is where the historic heart of the Jakomini district beats. The Old Post Office is not only one of the oldest buildings in the area, but also a structure of special significance: It was built by the man whose name now defines the entire district. Then as now, it is a place of arrival – once for letters and travelers, today for people who want to pause, observe, and discover.

Amidst all the hustle and bustle around it, the Alte Post exudes a quiet dignity. Those who take the time to explore Graz will discover a different side of the city: elegant, historic, charming, and wonderfully photogenic. Whether as an architectural highlight or as a surprising haven of peace in the heart of the city center, this place is worth a visit.

History & atmosphere of Old Post Office Graz

The Old Post Office, also known as Neuhof, was built in the years 1786 to 1787 The client was Kaspar Andreas Ritter von Jacomini, a wealthy entrepreneur who, with this project, created not only a prestigious residence but also a piece of urban development. The architect of the building was Josef Benedikt Withalm the Elder, who chose a strict, Josephinian-classical style – clear, symmetrical and without frills.

What today appears to be a closed building conceals a surprisingly generous four-winged courtyard with wrought iron arcades and an ornate fountain. The statue of a nymph is by Joseph Klieber and gives the place an almost poetic quality. In the 19th century, the building was kk post office – and thus gave the place where it stands its current character as a place of arrival and communication.

Despite multiple renovations, the original character has been preserved. Today, the Old Post Office is a fascinating piece Graz beneath the surface – a place where history becomes visible when you look more closely.

What Old Post Office Graz so special

The Old Post Office is neither a museum nor a classic sightseeing highlight – and that's precisely what makes it so special. It simply stands there, at the edge of the Jakominiplatz, between shops, snack bars, and bus stops. And yet it is one of the city's most historic buildings, in which past and present merge in a quiet, elegant way.

Stepping through the archway, you enter a world of your own: Suddenly, it becomes quieter, brighter, almost contemplative. You're standing in a courtyard that's over 230 years old – and still in use. Cafés, creative offices, small shops: Here, the old Graz lives on without being intrusive. For anyone who enjoys urban exploration, this place is a true insider tip.
