Augarten & Augartenbucht Graz: green oasis on the riverbank

Green river landscape on the Mur in Graz's Augarten park on a clear, sunny day. In the foreground is a well-tended meadow with large stones, behind which dense trees are reflected in the calm water. On the right, a curved path leads along the bank; a building with a red onion dome can be seen in the background

Just a few minutes' walk from Jakominiplatz, space suddenly opens up – and you're standing in the middle of one of the most relaxing corners of the city: the Augarten. In the lively Jakomini district, where trams roll, children laugh, and cyclists whizz by, this spacious park lies directly on the Mur River – perfect for taking a breather, having a picnic, playing, or simply gazing at the clouds. And right in the middle: the modern Augarten Bay with its curved seating steps, direct river access and urban chill factor.

What makes the Augarten special? Its diversity. Locals and travelers meet here, yoga mats and slacklines, strollers and coffee-to-go cups. The park is spacious enough to accommodate everyone – yet intimate enough to find quiet corners. The adjacent bay acts like a window to the water: a place where you can forget the city and simply enjoy the rippling Mur River.

Whether as a break between sightseeing tours, as a picnic spot with a view, or as an evening spot to watch the sunset – the Augarten is always a good idea. And if you look closely, you'll discover not only nature but also a piece of living city history.

History & atmosphere of Augarten & Augarten Bay

The Augarten has a long tradition: Already in the 19th century, the area was a public park, then still under the name Ohmeyer Park In 1899 he was Augarten renamed – a name that has remained to this day and stands for green recreation in the heart of the city. From a once classic park with avenues and fountains, the place has evolved into a modern urban park that has kept up with the times.

A real highlight is the Augarten Bay, which officially opened in spring 2020. A careful redesign of the Mur River bank created an artificial river bay with direct access to the water. The curved concrete steps invite you to sit, lie, and sunbathe – creating a modern counterpart to the historic park. Especially on warm days, the bay is a meeting place for those who want to enjoy city life and nature simultaneously.

What Augarten & Augarten Bay so special

The Augarten is much more than just a green space: it is a meeting place, a place of retreat, a space for exercise, and a chill-out zone all in one. You can jog or read, walk or skate, meet people or be completely alone – the park adapts to your pace.
