Kunsthaus Graz: The "Friendly Alien" in the heart of Lend

The Kunsthaus Graz opened in 2003 as a spectacular contribution to Graz's year as a European Capital of Culture. It was designed by British architects Sir Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, who deliberately sought a contrast to the historic old town. The result: an organic building with a futuristic shell that nestles like an oversized living being against the Iron House – a listed steel structure dating from 1848 that was integrated into the building.

The atmosphere at the Kunsthaus is modern, clean, and surprisingly inviting. Inside, you won't find traditional museum rooms, but rather open spaces, playful lighting, and flexible exhibition architecture. The highlight is the so-called "Needle," a glass viewing platform with spectacular views over Graz and the Schlossberg.

The Kunsthaus Graz is far more than a museum. It's a place of encounter, of interaction, of wonder. Here, you'll see exhibitions of contemporary art of international renown – from photography and installation to performance and digital media. At the same time, the building itself is a walk-in sculpture that offers you a new perspective on the city.

The outer skin of the building is also part of the overall concept: The so-called BIX media façade Consists of 930 illuminated points and serves as a gigantic screen for digital art. At night, the Kunsthaus appears like a living being, communicating with the city – entirely without words.

If you visit the Kunsthaus, you should definitely also visit the Art House Café Stop by the ground floor. It's one of the neighborhood's most popular meeting places—whether for breakfast, brunch, or after-work drinks. Sit at one of the window seats overlooking Südtiroler Platz and watch the hustle and bustle. And if you're there in the summer: the window front can be opened completely, creating a true open-air feeling in the middle of the city.
