The Murinsel (Mur Island) was opened in 2003 as part of Graz's European Capital of Culture year. Designed by New York artist and architect Vito Acconci, it is neither a bridge nor a pontoon—but rather a walkable work of art in the shape of an open shell, 50 meters long and 20 meters wide, made of steel and glass.
In the center, you'll find a café with panoramic views of the Mur, as well as a small amphitheater for events and a protected play area for children. Everything is open, accessible, and lively – yet the island feels like a haven of peace in the middle of the river. The gentle sound of the water accompanies you as you sit, chat, or observe.
The Murinsel is not only architecturally unique—it also symbolizes the new, bold Graz. It elegantly connects the Old Town and the Lend, bridging the gap between lifestyle and urban culture. Its shape, location, and lighting design make it a place you not only see, but also feel.
