The Mariahilferkirche (Church of St. Mary Help of Christians) was built between 1607 and 1611 according to the plans of Giovanni Pietro de Pomis, who also designed the mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II. Originally intended as a monastery church for the Minorites, it was later elevated to a parish church. However, the two distinctive onion domes were added over a century later – between 1742 and 1744 under the direction of Josef Hueber.
On the façade, you'll immediately notice the impressive figures of saints: Francis of Assisi, Anthony of Padua, and, at the very top, the Archangel Michael dramatically striking down the devil. Inside, however, a completely different atmosphere awaits you – simple, bright, and serene. The Bonaventure Chapel, with its baroque marble altar, ornate stucco, and the miraculous image by de Pomis, is a true highlight.
The Mariahilferkirche is not just a sight, but a vibrant place of faith and encounter. It combines Baroque architecture with Franciscan modesty—a rare blend. And precisely because it stands in the heart of one of Graz's busiest districts, the contrast between exterior and interior is particularly striking.
Right next door is the former Minorite monastery, which today serves as a venue for concerts, exhibitions, and cultural events. Here, you can feel how history and the present naturally blend together.
Visit the church in the late afternoon, when the light streams through the high windows and the figures inside shimmer golden. Afterwards, it's worth taking a detour to the Minoritensaal area—or simply enjoying a coffee in the garden directly in front of the church. If you're looking for a quiet moment, take a look at the Treasury Chapel with its votive offerings and the small Pietà.
