Lustbühel Castle Graz: petting zoo, walking trails & panoramic views in the east of the city

Today's Lustbühel Palace dates back to an early Baroque building from the 17th century. Originally, it served the nobility as a pleasure palace—a place for hunting, celebration, and retreat. In 1907, the building was extensively redesigned, acquiring its characteristic neo-Gothic appearance with its crenellated tower, stepped gables, and ornately wrought window grilles. Today, the ensemble appears playful, almost fairytale-like—nestled in a green oasis on the outskirts of the city.

The castle has been owned by the city of Graz since 1939. It currently houses a kindergarten, but the surrounding area is open to everyone and invites you to linger. Especially on clear days, the view from the elevated paths provides truly postcard-perfect moments.

Lustbühel Castle is a place for many interests: nature lovers, families, connoisseurs, and anyone looking for a little escape from the hustle and bustle of the city center. In the adjoining demonstration farm with petting zoo, you'll meet goats, chickens, sheep, and rabbits—a real highlight, especially for children. There are also spacious lawns, a lovingly designed playground, and numerous shady benches.

Just a few steps away is the Lustbühel Castle culinary spot – a wine tavern serving Styrian delicacies, which are also served outdoors during the warmer months. Homemade juices, snacks, and the famous apple strudel make every visit a truly enjoyable experience.

Another highlight: the small observatory nearby – ideal if you are interested in stars, planets and the vastness of the universe.

It's especially beautiful here in late summer and autumn, when the light falls softly over the fields and the city of Graz lies at your feet. If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, come during the weekday mornings—then you'll have the meadows practically to yourself. Tip: Bring binoculars—with a bit of luck, you'll see all the way from the path to the Neuen-Welt-Höhe to the Koralm.
