Pilgrimage Church of Maria Straßengel – Gothic pearl of Styria

The Maria Straßengel pilgrimage church sits enthroned on a hill above the town and is one of Austria's most important Gothic buildings. Rein Abbey – the oldest Cistercian monastery in the world

Just a few kilometers away lies Rein Abbey, founded in 1129. It is considered the oldest continuously inhabited Cistercian monastery in the world and is a place of tranquility, history, and hospitality. Guided tours, concerts, and the monastery inn make a visit a truly memorable experience.

The municipality Gratwein-Straßengel was created in 2015 through the merger of several districts – including Gratwein, Street angel, Judenburgstrasse and Pure. The area is settled since the early Middle Ages and played a central role in the region through the Rein Abbey and its location on old trade routes.
