A look back - the history of Premstätten

Settlement in what is now Premstätten dates back to the Neolithic period. Archaeological finds prove that the area south of Graz has been used for agriculture for thousands of years. In the Middle Ages, the region was primarily characterized by small estates and mills along the Mur River.

In the 20th century, the townscape changed fundamentally: Gravel mining created a large water-filled pit, which was later developed into today's Schwarzlsee. Starting in the 1970s, the area around the lake developed into a regionally important recreational area with increasing tourist appeal.

Another milestone was the founding of the Austrian Aviation Museum, which gained national attention with its collection of historic aircraft, original parts and exhibitions on the history of technology.

Today, Premstätten represents a combination of history, nature and modern leisure culture – a place where the past is reflected in the landscape and the present in active experiences.
