The history of Stiwoll is closely linked to the early medieval settlements of western Styria. The region surrounding today's municipal area was likely settled as early as the 9th century. The first documented mentions date back to the 12th century.
For centuries, Stiwoll was a scattered agricultural settlement on a ridge between Hitzendorf, Sankt Oswald, and Gratwein. The village developed around the church and the rectory, which served as a spiritual and social center.
The rural structure has been preserved for centuries. Historic squares, granaries, and wayside shrines still characterize the landscape today. Many farmsteads have been cultivated for generations—a living heritage that is maintained and made visible in the region.
