But Geidorf also has an exciting past—shaped by agriculture, education, and constant change, which has made the district one of Graz's most charming neighborhoods.
Until the 19th century, Geidorf was a rather rural area outside the city gates. The area was characterized by vineyards, fields and craft businesses, cultivated along the Mur River and on the rolling hills to the north. The few settlements consisted of small farms, gardens, and rural inns. Geidorf was the city's green belt—a local recreation area for wealthy urbanites and an important provider for Graz's growing population.
With the expansion of Graz during the 19th century, Geidorf also changed. The construction of the Karl-Franzens University in the immediate vicinity brought new life to the district: professors, students and academic staff settled there. middle-class residential buildings, villas, and the first rental buildings – many of them in the historicist and Art Nouveau style, which still characterise Geidorf today.
The district was also developed in terms of infrastructure: trams connected Geidorf with the old town and the northern districts, while schools, churches and small parks strengthened public life.
