Anyone who comes to Gösting will see it immediately: The impressive Gösting castle ruins Towering high above the district, it is an unmistakable landmark in the northwest of Graz. Built in the 11th century, it once served to protect the Graz Basin and was a strategically important point on old trade routes. Today, it is a popular hiking destination – with a short but rewarding route through the forest and fantastic panoramic views over Graz to the Schöckl mountain range.

From the Middle Ages to the valley

After a devastating fire caused by lightning in 1723, the castle was abandoned. Instead of rebuilding it, the noble Attems family had a new residential castle built in the valley – the baroque Lock GöstingLocated in the middle of a small park directly on the Göstinger Straße, it is privately owned but clearly visible from the outside. Its baroque elegance contrasts with the ruins above and tells of the changing times – a true insider tip for history buffs with an eye for detail.
