For many centuries, Straßgang was an independent village southwest of Graz. The name derives from the term "Straß-geng" – which means "area on the road." Indeed, the place was an important transportation hub from an early age: Old trade and pilgrimage routes passed through here, including the route to Slovenia and Carinthia.
The settlement grew along the road, accompanied by farms, craft businesses, and religious sites. This origin can still be felt today: in the winding alleys, old farmsteads, and the historic parish church. St. Florian, which has been the center of the town for centuries.
Above the district stands the impressive St. Martin Castle, which was originally built as a fortification in the Middle Ages and later expanded in the Baroque style. Over time, the castle was rebuilt several times and served, among other things, as an official residence and educational center.
Today, St. Martin Castle is owned by the state of Styria and houses a modern educational institution. The view from the hill over the district to the Graz Basin is impressive—a popular spot for walks, events, and photographers looking for the perfect subject.
